Is there an analysis of the changing structure of this song?

Playing in the Band seems to be like water -- whose color changes with the color of the vessel. Comparing shows just a month apart, 8/27/72 and 9/28/72, the direction of improv and the moods are different.

Are there songs that naturally fit inside this improvisatory space and can be recognized? It appears that my short term memory is worn down and I always forget to write this stuff down.

I've not seen anything on "PITB" as comprehensive as the excellent "Evolution of Dark Star" piece that was floating around a few years back (apologies to the author but my text of file of that doesn't give credit). It would be interesting to see something charted from "The Main Ten" onward, although I don't think it would be as intricate.
